Los Amigos de Mazarrón CF
The friends of Mazarrón football club
The Brits are passionate about their football no matter where in the world they are and, here in Mazarrón on Spain's Costa Calida, we are no exception. As the ex-pat community grew, small groups of football fanatics started following the local football team, Mazarrón CF. These groups became aware of each other and it was suggested that they got together and formed a supporters club. An inaugural meeting was arranged in February 2006, attended by a mere 14 people. Certain individuals took on active rolls to help the club progress and it was suggested that a meeting be arranged with Mazarrón CF officials. This was warmly received and was the start of a friendly integration with the football club, which had now become Mazarrón Sanantonio CF. The ensuing meeting was attended by several officials, including the president, and also the much-needed presence of a local television reporter who acted as interpreter and has proved invaluable in our on-going relationship with Mazarrón Sanantonio CF. After much discussion on how we could offer our support to the club it was suggested we start by having an official title. It was it this point that the name Los Amigos de Mazarrón CF (the friends of Mazarrón football club) was adopted.
In the months that followed a lot of work was put in to ensure the success of this club. A 'Player of the Year' award was presented and an end of season dinner dance was enjoyed by supporters and representatives of Mazarrón Sanantonio CF. The season finished with our first annual general meeting when the committee was officially elected. By this time membership had grown to 45. At this meeting it was also decided that we support the Mazarrón bases (junior football teams) and it was agreed that we could start by providing them with training equipment i.e. bibs, balls and kit bags, which were presented at the start of the 2006/2007 season. As a result of this association, some Los Amigos members have become involved with the coaching of the junior team.
The 2006/2007 season started with a rapid increase in membership, which now stands at nearly 200 Members of Los Amigos are at present entitled to subsidised coach travel to all the away games, but seats on the coach are now at a premium. Away support of Spanish clubs is virtually unknown, but we'd like to think that Los Amigos has encouraged this as Mazarrón Sanantonio CF now has an active following of local supporters.
Social events form an important part of our long-term success and we hope to promote a variety to suit all tastes.
Our main aims are to support Mazarrón Sanantonio CF, integrate within the local community and fuel our love of the 'beautiful game'!
Although our members are predominantly British, membership is open to all nationalities on acceptance of the constitution & rules.
